Simphiwe Mafene relieved as HWBSL start date brings clarity

University of Fort Hare coach Simphiwe Mafene says the team has used the extended pre-season period to address internal administrative matters while awaiting the resumption of the 2026 Hollywoodbets Super League.

The delay in the start of the new season was due to scheduling adjustments around the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which has since been postponed to July and August.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mafene admitted that the uncertainty surrounding the confirmation of new league dates had a significant impact on the team’s preparations.

“The uncertainty was the biggest challenge for us, as it affected our day-to-day planning and overall preparations. However, it also gave us an opportunity to pause and address some administrative matters. At this point, everything is in order, the team is in good spirits, and we are excited about the new competition changes for 2026,” said Mafene.

The 37-year-old coach also confirmed that new players will be joining the squad to strengthen key areas, with official announcements expected closer to the start of the season.

“We conducted a thorough assessment after last season and identified areas that needed strengthening, particularly where challenges affected our results towards the end of the campaign. We believe management will make the necessary announcements as early as April,” Mafene added.

Mafene says the team is now more at ease following confirmation that the league is set to resume next month, after engagements with the South African Football Association (SAFA).

“Following the SAFA pre-season meeting held on 14 March 2026, it was indicated that the league will start next month, which has really put us at ease,” she expressed.
