Simphiwe Mafene proud of comeback draw against JVW

University of Fort Hare coach Simphiwe Mafene has praised his side’s fighting spirit after they came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw against Hollywoodbets Super League Amplified Super Rise leaders JVW.

The Eastern Cape outfit trailed 2-1 heading into the break before striker Keisha Hendricks netted the equaliser in the 64th minute to earn her side the crucial point.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mafene says his team produced a much improved second-half display to deny their opponents maximum points.

“Our draw against JVW, the current log leaders, was a very important point, especially after our walkover against Ezemvelo. The ladies did extremely well after trailing 2-1. Our second half overall was very good. We created plenty of opportunities and were just unlucky not to convert more of our chances. I’m truly proud of how the team fought for this point,” said Mafene.

The Baby Wolves have managed one win and three draws from their opening five matches. Mafene insists they still believe they can turn their season around after the international break and remain in contention.

“Nothing is lost at the moment. We cannot admit that we are out of the equation until the last game of the season. The games we have played so far will serve as lessons for the remainder of the campaign. We have a plan and will fight until the end of the season,” added Mafene.

Mafene says the break will provide players with an opportunity to rest, but they have also been given individual training programmes to ensure they maintain their fitness ahead of the team’s return to league action on 29 July.

“We allowed our players to return to their respective homes for active rest, but we also gave them individual workout programmes to make sure they remain accountable. The team will resume preparations on 29 July 2026, and we want to ensure that the players maintain their fitness levels,” he expressed.
