Noko Matlou wants to inspire next generation of female footballers

Banyana Banyana legend Noko Matlou says her decision to return to South Africa and join hometown club Ramatlaohle FC was driven by a desire to share her experience and inspire the next generation of players.

The veteran defender recently signed for the Limpopo outfit after a successful four-year stint in Spain, where she spent her final season with CP Cacereño Femenino.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Matlou says she is enjoying the challenge of playing for a newly promoted side, alongside players that are motivated to perform well in the Hollywoodbets Super League.

“The reason behind my decision to return to South Africa and play for my hometown club is that I want the players to learn from me. I want to help develop them by passing on my knowledge and skills, as I come with valuable experience gained in Europe.

“I believe being part of a new team that has just been promoted is quite exciting because the players understand that this is top-flight football. They have to learn quickly and adapt quickly. It is never easy, but we have to show up if we want to cement our place in this league,” said Matlou.

Having spent the majority of her career in Europe, Matlou also reflected on the growth of the Hollywoodbets Super League since her return.

“I think the Hollywoodbets Super League is improving every year, but I can’t honestly compare it to the European leagues. Football there is faster and more competitive. I must add, though, that I enjoy being home and finding a meaningful way to contribute to women’s football in the domestic league,” added Matlou.

The 40-year-old believes the biggest lessons she gained from her time in Europe were the importance of adaptability and tactical discipline - qualities she hopes to instill at Ramatlaohle FC.
