Sibisi looks back at Hugo Broos’ impact on his career

Sibisi was part of Broos’ teams at back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments in Ivory Coast and Morocco and most recently participated in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. 

He looks back at the great impact the 74-year-old made in South African football...

Sibisi was still with Golden Arrows, when he made Broos’ first Bafana team, in an international friendly match against Uganda in June 2021.  The former Belgian international was also a non-nonsense coach and ruffled some feathers, but Sibisi says that was all coming from a good place...

"Some people might've been offended by some of his comments, but it was coming from a good heart and a positive mindset that said we should always strive for more. He showed hard work and discipline throughout and I hope he enjoys his retirement, I also sent him a message to show my gratitude for all of his faith in me."

When he announced that he’s not extending his contract last week, Broos reiterated how he was doing things in his own way, and how this has worked perfectly for him. One of those were selections and Sibisi recalls how his selection at times, was questioned by some people and yet Broos stuck with him.

Meanwhile, this weekend, the South African Football Association (SAFA) National Executive Committee (NEC) is meeting to discuss and decide on Broos’ successor, the man who will lead Bafana Bafana in the AFCON 2027 qualifiers as from next month. 

Former Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane is the favourite to return to the hot seat bar some football politics, it is believed he will be announced as the new coach, and the most important thing the technical committee has heard from him and other candidates is that Bafana Bafana have got a team with good foundations.
