Usuthu beat KwaZulu-Natal rivals Golden Arrows 1-0 at King Zwelithini Stadium on Tuesday evening, which saw them move above Kaizer Chiefs and Sekhukhune United into third place for now.
Zwane has often spoken about his side “choking” whenever they get close to the front runners, and says breaking into that bracket alongside the likes of Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns feels significant.
"You can see I'm smiling, even though it's for 24 hours – you know that top three position, to be quite honest, we needed to break the ice at some point because this was – if I'm not mistaken – our eighth attempt," said Zwane.
"But I want you to know we are a work in progress, we have youngsters – as you can see by some of the mistakes they commit, who still have a lot to learn.
"And the game is a teacher, the only time they can learn is when they are given the opportunity to play, and they will grow in stature.
"So, as I said, I think the goal we scored deserved top three – that was a scorcher, and it deserved three points as well, and when the energy levels were dropping, they still kept their focus.
"Yes, we had blackouts here and there, but some guys kept the team in the game, especially the senior players, like 'Hana' [Riaan Hanamud], 'Tara' [Taarieq Files], Sandile [Mthethwa] as well, even though we started a bit shaky at the back."
