Gabriel targets Top 8 finish with Richards Bay next season

The Natal Rich Boyz ended the previous campaign in 11th place, narrowly missing out on qualification for the 2026 MTN8. It marked a step back after they secured an eighth-place finish on the final day of the 2024/25 season to earn a place in the top-eight competition.

Gabriel will lead the side as sole head coach this season following the departure of former co-coach Papi Zothwane, who joined Sekhukhune United as assistant coach to Cedric Kaze.

Speaking exclusively to SABC Sport, Gabriel outlined the team’s ambitions for the new campaign.

“We feel a top eight target will be a fair benchmark to set ourselves this coming season. I am looking forward to the challenge of being the head coach for the upcoming season.”

Richards Bay have been active in the transfer market as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new campaign. The club has signed goalkeeper Nhlakanipho Ngcobo, defender Siyabonga Gumede, striker Nqaba Xulu, while experienced midfielders Philani Sithebe and Khayelihle Mncube have also joined the team.

“New signings have integrated well into the dynamics of the team. We are looking to add the much needed depth in the squad,” according to Gabriel.

Gabriel also says preparations for the new season have progressed as planned.

“Pre-season is going according to plan. Fifth week of pre-season, the group has adjusted accordingly to the required demands. The preparations are on track.”

Richards Bay will begin their 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign against Polokwane City at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex on Sunday, 2 August 2026.
