Soweto Derby offers Kazier Chiefs redemption – Yusuf Maart

Kaizer Chiefs captain Yusuf Maart believes a win for Amakhosi in the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates will set the tone for the remainder of what has otherwise been a forgettable season.

The Glamour Boys have just three Betway Premiership matches to try to push for a top eight position, but have Pirates, Sekhukhune United, and Polokwane City standing in their way.

A week ago, Chiefs were stunned by Marumo Gallants in their own backyard, setting them up for a difficult few weeks in securing a spot in the MTN8.

Maart says they have to turn the corner against Pirates.

"We may not have been doing well in our last few games, but we know that momentum can shift, especially on Derby day.

"The coach knows exactly how he wants us to play and how he wants his game plan to work," said the Amakhosi midfielder.

The skipper hopes for a different energy in the squad ahead of taking on their bitter rivals, a side they will meet again in the Nedbank Cup final a week later.

"In football, everyone's energy and mindset must be on the same page. Everyone is excited for this weekend's match, as well as the Nedbank Cup final next week," said the skipper.

Maart expects Chiefs to move on from the disappointment of losing to Gallants, as well as other results that have not gone their way.

The midfielder adds that their up and down form has also got to do with personal challenges the players are going through individually.

"I think there are plenty of challenges players go through, both on and off the football field. You don't know about the issues they're going through because many players don't open up.

"As for myself, you can judge me, but my positive mental approach will never change," declared Maart.
