Parker believes that Bafana’s new system should have been trialed

Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 loss in the opening game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup to hosts Mexico has left a lot of questions about the formation that was employed on the day, and Bafana legend Bernard Parker has weighed in on the matter.

Parker believes that Bafana Bafana should have played the new formation in at least three or four matches to be convinced that it was the best approach to go with. It came with offensive limitations, as Parker looks at its shortcomings...

"I feel that we should've played our normal formation. We should've come into the opening game with this new formation knowing that we've adopted this approach in a few games before the opener. We could've and should've started with our traditional 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1."

Bafana head coach Hugo Broos went with a back three and wingbacks, three holding midfielders and two strikers. 

The formation limited the team offensively, and didn’t showcase what South African football has to offer.

The first goal that Bafana Bafana conceded came from a Mexican pressing trap that they failed to deal with as Sphephelo Sithole was dispossessed and punished by the hosts.
