University of Fort Hare aims to develop more players for national team

University of Fort Hare coach Simphiwe Mafene says part of the club’s 2026 strategic plan is to produce more players capable of contributing to the national team.

This follows the recent call-up of their first-choice goalkeeper Katlego Moletsane, who impressed after keeping a clean sheet in one of the two Banyana Banyana international friendlies against Algeria.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mafene unpacks the importance of the university’s collaboration with its Faculty of Human Movement Science, which he says has played a crucial role in improving player performance through tailored fitness programmes.

“Our strategic plan for 2026 clearly outlines the need to produce more players who can compete and contribute at national level. Our collaboration with the Faculty of Human Movement Science has helped our players build the necessary strength and confidence to enhance their performance.

“Last season, Fort Hare had two players earn national call-ups - Rennika Khoza and Michelle Sampson. Moletsane was unfortunate to miss out after joining late during pre-season, but this year she has had a full preparation opportunity, and we are already seeing the results. We are aiming to produce even more players for the national team,” said Mafene.

The 37-year-old coach also praised Moletsane’s resilience, revealing that her impressive performance in the national team came despite personal challenges.

“Following the passing of her father and the difficulties she faced during pre-season, it was emotional for us as a team. We were incredibly proud to see how strong she was in that final friendly. It was a brilliant performance,” added Mafene.

Mafene believes that discipline and perseverance will be key if Fort Hare is to consistently supply players to the national setup while remaining competitive domestically.

“It will take dedication, perseverance and discipline for us to achieve this goal, but we are committed to producing players who can perform at the highest level and also help the team succeed in the domestic league,” he concluded.
