Lutendo Maiwashe confident SA can retain Africa Cup title

This is after Netball South Africa announced a 15-player squad for the tournament, which will take place in Nairobi from 19 to 26 September.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Maiwashe says the squad has the right balance of experience and talent to match the growing standard of men’s netball on the continent.

"I think we have a great team this year, and there is a good mix of talent and experience. These players have been hungry to get out on court to represent their country."

The South African men’s national team went through an intense selection camp in Johannesburg over the weekend, with players battling for a place in the final squad.

Maiwashe says he is grateful to have earned the nod from the technical team, while praising the players for bringing their best to the trials.

"I must say the trials are always a mind game. It's intense because players are hungry to show up and show their talent. Nobody knew who was going to make this squad, that's how competitive everyone was."

The Protea Warriors recently stepped up their preparations with a 42-31 victory over Eswatini at the Mavuso Sport Emporium in Manzini.

Maiwashe says the match was crucial in helping the team fine-tune combinations ahead of their title defence in Kenya.
