Banyana goalkeeper Katlego Moletsane excited to seize first WAFCON opportunity

Moletsane has been included in the senior national team’s final tournament squad for the first time, having previously been on standby for the 2012 and 2022 editions.

Speaking to SABC Sport, the 31-year-old expressed her gratitude for the opportunity and added that she is determined to help Banyana Banyana reclaim the continental title.

“It is a blessing to find myself here again. Remember I have only been on standby for the 2012 and the 2022 WAFCON. I am happy to be joining the main squad and to be trusted to bring the trophy home. I want to remain focused and, if I do get some game time, I need to showcase my talent and show up for the team,” said Moletsane.

Banyana Banyana reached the semi-finals at the previous edition, where they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Nigeria before losing to Ghana on penalties in the bronze medal match. Moletsane believes the team has what it takes to go one step further this year.

“The team did their best last time, and we are proud of reaching the semi-finals. We know what is at stake and we want to take it a step further this year by reaching the final. I believe we have a talented squad that can go all the way. We have the right balance of young and experienced players,” added Moletsane.

Moletsane also highlighted the value of having a core group of players who lifted the WAFCON trophy in 2022, saying their experience and leadership will be vital throughout the tournament.

“We have experienced players in the team and we are blessed to still have the core squad that won the championship in 2022. Our senior players continue to play a leadership role on and off the field, helping to guide the younger players as we prepare for this year’s WAFCON,” she expressed.
