Stellenbosch hold on to 1-0 win over ten-man Cape Town City

Hosts Stellenbosch ended Cape Town City's six-match win streak with a 1-0 win in their DStv Premiership clash in the Winelands on Friday night.

It was a cagey opening few minutes of the Cape Derby, with few chances on attack. However, Stellenbosch's Iqraam Rayners showed that he has plenty of wheels with some exciting runs.

It was the Citizens who manufactured the first real chance with Khanyiso Mayo forcing a save out of local gloveman Oscarine Masuluke. Minutes later, Marc van Heerdan's header from a corner missed the target.

The breakthrough finally came in the 39th minute, with Stellies' Devon Titus providing the assist for Ivorian Anicet Ouras, who needed just one powerful touch to beat Darren Keet.

Early in the second stanza, Titus found himself in space in front of goal, but failed to capitalise. The hosts continued to press and enjoyed the bulk of the ball while controlling the game, frustrating City.

Somewhat against the run play, the visitors almost equalised. Replacement Patrick Fisher Norman teed the ball up from a free kick and delivered a dangerous cross, but Tsheghofatso Nyama's glancing header could only find the crossbar.

The frustration continued for the visitors, as evident by Khanisa Mayo™s actions. The striker went down softly in the penalty area but the referee was having none of it showing Mayo his second yellow, leaving the City down a man for the final minutes of the game. It mattered little, as Stellenbosch held on without incident.
