Stellenbosch FC weigh up move for defender Katlego Mkhabela

The 30-year-old right-back, who featured 19 times for Orbit College in all competitions last season, is currently training with the Cape Winelands outfit, where a decision on his future is expected before the new campaign gets underway this weekend. 

Hunt has been rebuilding his team following a significant player exodus at the end of the previous campaign, while several key departures have accelerated the need for reinforcements.

The public broadcaster understands Stellenbosch have also had to explore alternative options after a proposed move for Njabulo Blom failed to materialise, although the registeration window remains open until 22 September 2026.

Mkhabela brings topflight experience, having previously represented Sekhukhune United before joining Orbit, and is now available after parting ways with the Rustenburg side following their relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Stellies have been selective in this transfer market, preferring to explore free-agent opportunities and loan deals rather than making a host of purchases.

Earlier in the window, the club assessed Happy Mashiane before ultimately securing Terrence Mashego on loan from Mamelodi Sundowns. 

Mkhabela's assessment comes with Stellenbosch looking to strengthen their defensive options before opening their league campaign against AmaZulu on Saturday. 

The defender could also provide cover for Thabiso Lebitso, who is likely to be the first choice at right-back after completing his move from Orlando Pirates in a cash-plus-player deal involving midfielder Mthetheleli Mthiyane.
