Thabang Mosiako successfully defends his Joburg 10km title

South African long-distance runner Thabang Mosiako is setting his sights on a top-three finish at the Diamond and Doring Kimberley Big Hole Marathon after successfully defending his Hollywoodbets Joburg 10km title on Sunday.

The Nedbank Running Club star crossed the finish line in 30:43 to win the race and pocket R40 000 in front of a sold-out field of 12 000 runners at Nasrec.

Former Comrades Marathon champion Edward Mothibi of Hollywood Athletics Club finished second in 30:51, while Rebaone Obotseng of Distance Running Club claimed third place in the same time under ideal racing conditions.

Mosiako has wasted no time turning his attention to his next challenge in the Northern Cape, where he will compete in the half-marathon on Saturday.

"I am going to Diamond next week. I think I am going to have fun in the 21 km. I will be happy if I can be in the top three, and I know it seems impossible, but I will fight. To be honest, the 10 km for now is fast; you saw how these guys are running. But ja, the half-marathon is good for me at the moment because it has those mature guys most of the time," said Mosiako

He says he is enjoying racing over the distance again and is pleased with the consistency he has shown in recent races.

"Thanks, everyone. Thanks to Hollywoodbets for such a great and amazing race. I am really happy with my achievement today because it's my second time running the Hollywoodbets Joburg. I think it was my third or fourth, but I have been maintaining a podium finish, so I can say I am very happy I managed to defend my title."

The 31-year-old admits that his recent marathon in Cologne, Germany, took a toll on his body. Having competed just two weeks ago, Mosiako was concerned about how his tired legs would affect his performance. The North West-born runner has battled injuries in the past, but says he is currently managing well and taking precautions to stay healthy.

Despite occasional concerns about getting injured again, Mosiako was happy to celebrate his victory and dedicated it to his wife, Thandi, for her support.
