Gavin Hunt bemoans Stellies player exodus on the eve of season kick-off

Stellies have parted ways with a handful of players like Thabo Moloisane, Ibraheem Jabaar, Mthetheleli Mthiyane, Omega Mdaka, and just yesterday confirmed the departure of Thapelo Mokobodi to Orlando Pirates. 

Hunt says this makes things very difficult for him, and confirmed that they’re about to lose another player. 

SABC Sport reported yesterday that Langelihle Phili is also on the cusp of a move to Kaizer Chiefs.

"As you know a lot of players have left and we've brought in a few, but it obviously takes some time to settle in. As I'm looking at my phone now I see another player leaving."

Hunt has been part of ‘selling’ clubs in his illustrious coaching career and found a way to make it work, something he hopes to do at Stellenbosch. 

He won three successive league titles with SuperSport United while the club was losing players to the traditional bigger clubs in the country.

Hunt’s team will host AmaZulu in their season opener this Saturday, and will hope to get a better start than last season when he had to come in mid-season to perform a rescue act. He admitted that not having their home venue available to them for the fixture is less than ideal.

"We want to have a better start than the club had last year, and you can never look too far ahead. You have to sort the first game out and then go from there. It is a home game for us but we'll have to play away, in fact we have got seven away games in a row because of no stadiums being available."

Having battled relegation fears they lost out on the top eight by a whisker in the end. While Hunt believes this is reason to celebrate, he would have loved to play the MTN8 as the first cup competition of the season.
