My role is to guide new players - Itumeleng Khune

Kaizer Chiefs veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune insists his new contract means he will mentor newly signed players at Amakhosi.

Khune was speaking to the media ahead of their DStv Premiership opener against Chippa United on Sunday at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The goalie has been at Naturena throughout his career. He made his professional debut in 2007. The last couple of seasons have been challenging with injuries affecting his performance.

Despite the challenges, the club rewarded him with a contract, which also indicates that he will be secured after retirement.

"Obviously it is a great relief, to get a new contract. Yes, there were agreements that needed to be made, regarding my future with the club" Khune told the media

"I am grateful to the chairman, board and everyone for another opportunity. My role is to play and guide the players, especially the new ones, so they can settle quicker," Khune said.

"I think a player of my calibre, it was very important to sit down with me, and make me understand how the team will manage me. Not able to play all the games, honestly, I do not mind, the club has given me huge respect, I'm happy with my new role, it was discussed and for now I'm still focusing on playing."

The last eight seasons have been tough with supporters dissatisfied with the results. The keeper says the only way to respond is to reclaim glory days and win trophies, starting this season.

"Everyone deserves respect, as players we have to earn that respect. We have to respond through results, on the field of play. We do not have to fight through the media, opinions are there about us because we are a big institution and we have to show that on the field," Khune added.

"Supporters have a right to be angry, we have failed them. The only way they can be easy on us, is us winning games and trophies. We want to win trophies again and qualify for continent football. Criticism is there, the only way to respond is winning."
