For the first time in a very long time, the league title race will go down to the wire, and there’s a huge possibility that it could also be decided on goal difference. Sundowns currently leads with three points, with Pirates having a game in hand and a superior goal difference in second position. Mosimane, who won five league titles with Sundowns, says this title race brings some excitement to the local game.
"This is good for football. You never know what is going to happen. If I had asked you ten days ago, you wouldn't have said what's happening now, right? So it's a game of football. So whichever team you support, whether you're Chiefs, Sundowns or Pirates. It's never over until the fat lady has sung, right? she hasn't sung yet. So every week is a story," said Mosimane
A hard-fought midweek draw between Sundowns and Chiefs has brought Pirates back into the full picture, and they have got their fate in their own hands when it comes to the league title race. All they need to do is to win the last three games against Magesi FC, Durban City, and Orbit College and claim what will be their first league title in 15 years. But Sundowns is not going to give up without a fight, as Mosimane looks at how Amakhosi have had a big say in this title race.
But it’s not just on the local front that there’s excitement. In Morocco, a South African, Fadlu Davids, is sitting on top of the Botola Pro League with Raja Casablanca, just a point ahead of Maghreb Fez and FAR Rabat, after 19 games played. Ahead of tomorrow’s highly anticipated Casablanca derby against arch-rivals Wydad Casablanca, Mosimane had this to say.
"Moroccan teams will always be around. The North Africans believe the trophy belongs to them; it doesn't belong to sub-sahara, and we can argue, but they can say, 'look at your facts.' So, ja, I am happy for Fadlu, and I wish him all the best. He knows my heart; he knows that I support him, and thats what I want to see. I want to see our coaches be big imports, so we need that."
Meanwhile, the big one is also coming next weekend, as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that the first leg of the CAF Champions League final between Mamelodi Sundowns and FAR Rabat will be held at Loftus Stadium on the 17th of this month, at 4pm, with the return leg scheduled for Rabat, the following weekend on the 24th. Mosimane, a three-time winning CAFCL coach, says it’s about time the Brazilians end the North African’s domination.
