Modiba opens up on Sundowns' emotional pre-season after Adams' death

The Brazilians delayed their departure for their training camp in Austria after Adams was found dead in an apartment in Cape Town, just weeks after returning from the FIFA World Cup. 

Speaking at the MTN8 launch ahead of Saturday night's quarter-final against Polokwane City at Loftus Versveld, Modiba admitted the tragedy cast a shadow over the squad. 

"It has been very challenging and difficult for everyone to come to terms with, not only the team but also the entire country. Some of the guys weren't mentally there at training and the coach understood that."

Sundowns’ request to have their opening Betway Premiership clash against Marumo Gallants was granted by the PSL and while they understood the circumstances, Modiba says they were ready to begin the season by then. 

"Mentally, all of us were prepared to play on the first. One would've loved to play because you don't want to fall behind in the league even early on. We had to accept the situation and focus on the MTN8."

On the pitch, not much has changed with Modiba pointing out that, with only a handful of new signings Sundowns are looking for continuity. 

Although they are African champions, Sundowns have struggled to win the MTN8 and other domestic competitions outside of the league title.
