Khalil Ben Youssef happy as Kaizer Chiefs finally deliver three points

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssuf says performance was not the main priority last night as Amakhosi finally registered their first win in five Betway Premiership matches.

Guinea Bissau-born striker Flavio Silva came from the bench to score the only goal during their 1-0 win over Durban City at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

It was a relief for Chiefs as they finally moved to third on the table, with Ben Youssef acknowledging that their football display wasn’t the best.

"As I explained before, we expected this game to be tough for us. We expected it will be tough to keep the same performance after winning the [CAF Confederation] Cup game and qualifying for the group stage," said Ben Youssef.

"We know the mentality here in South Africa, it's difficult to keep the same mentality – you see the other teams who played in the cup game, for example Stellenbosch, they lost 4-0 against Marumo Gallants.

"So for us, the most important thing was winning the game, the performance would come after. If you remember last season, or when we started the season, in a lot of games there were good performances but without results.

"Now we thought only about the result, winning the game and then we'd have been happy if the performance came with winning, but the first priority was winning the game."

Chiefs now have 19 points from 10 matches, just two points behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, and ahead of their next game against Orbit College on Tuesday, Ben Youssef says they need to show consistency.

"Our problem last season was that we were inconsistent in our performances and results, but the target of the team this season is always to keep our players ready for every game, they have to fight in every game," he added.

"We need to keep our consistency in performance and results, and like I said, every game we're treating it as a cup game, now we've finished this game and tomorrow we're back to start to think about the next game.

"We need to win the next game to stay in the top three or two of the Betway Premiership."
