Katleho Malebane welcomes automatic qualification to FIFA World Cup Africa Qualifiers next round

South Africa U17 women’s national team midfielder Katleho Malebane says securing automatic qualification to the next round of the FIFA World Cup Africa Qualifiers is a “blessing in disguise”, as it gives the team another opportunity to chase their dream.

This comes after the Central African Republic withdrew from their first-round qualifier against South Africa, handing the team passage to the next stage without kicking a ball.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Malebane admitted the situation brings mixed emotions, but emphasised the team’s determination to prove themselves in the next round, where they will face either Botswana or Tanzania.

“It’s a bit of mixed emotions, to be honest. On one hand, qualifying automatically is a blessing - you take it because the main goal is always to move forward in the competition. It gives us another opportunity to keep chasing our dream.

“But at the same time, as players, we always want to compete and earn it on the pitch. You want to test yourselves, fight for the result, and prove your quality in the game,” said Malebane.

The Limpopo-born rising star is currently in the United Kingdom, representing Mamelodi Sundowns juniors, where she is preparing to face Leeds United as part of a Volkswagen initiative. She confirmed she will return to South Africa in time for the second round of the qualifiers.

“Yes, I’ll definitely be available and ready if I’m selected for the second round of the U17 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Representing the national team is always an honour, and it’s something I take very seriously.

“For us to win, a few key things need to be right. First, preparation is everything—we need to work hard in training, stay focused, and improve on the mistakes from last year. Secondly, unity in the team is crucial. When we trust each other and play as one, we become much stronger,” she added.

Malebane also shared what qualification for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup - set to take place in Morocco later this year - would mean to her.

“Qualifying for the World Cup would mean everything to me. It would be a dream come true, not just for myself but for my family, my teammates, and everyone who has supported me along the way.

“It would also mean representing the country at the highest level, showing what we’re capable of, and inspiring other young players back home to believe that it’s possible,” she expressed.
