The two Betway Premiership giants shared the spoils in a tense encounter that ended 1-1, with Sundowns reduced to 10 men after midfielder Jayden Adams received a red card.
Despite dropping two valuable points at home, Cardoso insisted there had only been one team attempting to play football and suggested Chiefs’ approach was aimed more at stopping Sundowns than competing openly.
"In these moments and after a match like this, a coach must have the capacity to focus on what is important also to pass outside and make some analysis," said Cardoso.
"I think you [media] should also make some analysis because in the past week, we had two of the biggest matches that can be played in South Africa.
"We had an Orlando Pirates vs Kaizer Chiefs and then a Mamelodi Sundowns vs Kaizer Chiefs, and I remember in this room, you asked me many times about the level of the game in South Africa.
"But after these two matches you have an answer – that's basically the conclusion that you have to make, there's a still a lot to do to develop the game, and that's basically the conclusion.
"Because matches are always emotions, but emotions should take a direction towards the technical and tactical sides of the game, but today there was nothing like that on the pitch, there was just fights from the beginning.
"In Pirates' match, fights from the beginning, balls in the air, kicking in the front, kicking [behind], kicking players, kicking legs, kicking everything.
"So I don't really think it's the best way to think about the future of the game here, but that's just the first analysis – and it started from the beginning of the match, how it started and how it was managed."
