Gavin Hunt on lessons for SuperSport United in CAF tournaments

Although SuperSport United are yet to earn a point in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage, coach Gavin Hunt has revealed why the experience gained has been invaluable for his squad.

Matsatsantsa host Libyan side Al Halilal Benghazi at the Peter Mokaba Stadium tonight for their fourth match in Group A. Hunt has previously stated SuperSport lacks the depth to balance both the domestic and continental schedules, but he does recognize the benefits of having made it this far.

"When you play in CAF, as I've been doing for over 30 years, learn how to play the game. So, gaining intelligence is a big thing in Africa, and I think we've learned. For some of these young kids, even some of the older ones, who haven't had the experience of playing [in CAF competitions], gaining intelligence is very important. [You learn] how to manage your game, how to handle a game," said Hunt.

The four-time league title winner adds he also allowed the players to express themselves a lot more during their Confederation Cup campaign than he normally would in a PSL fixture.

"I haven't made them play with too many restrictions. We've gone out and just played pretty much openly to try and win the games. And I think we could've won, we had chances."

Hunt has taken this approach not only to give young players a chance, but to ensure the regulars are fit and available for DStv Premiership games.

"We have to try and be clever. Domestically, we need our focus, but we also need to be better at this African competition. We can't get ourselves into trouble like the club was a few years ago [by] almost getting relegated by getting into the final. We cannot afford that. I won't let that happen. No."
