Kruger United coach Abram Mongoya reveals lessons from Gavin Hunt

Mongoya guided Kruger to promotion to the Betway Premiership in impressive style last season, winning the Motsepe Foundation Championship with two games to spare. 

Now about to make their debut in the top league with an opening match against Kaizer Chiefs this weekend, he revealed how he’ll be approaching their debut season - straight from the Gavin Hunt school of planning.

"We are setting reasonable targets. If there is one thing I've learned from coach Gavin Hunt is he broke down a season into blocks of five games. Now we need to build and establish Kruger United in the PSL."

Hunt is easily the most experienced and successful coach in the upcoming PSL season, having started his career back in the 90’s and has won everything there is to win domestically. 

Mongoya says he’s a reference point for all the young coaches in the country, but also says he’s learnt a lot from other coaches he’s worked with.

"For many of us coaches, he is a reference because of what he has achieved over the years and the reputation he now holds. Gavin Hunt is not the only one, Arthur Zwane gave me an opportunity when I was at Kaizer Chiefs, coach Steve Komphela also gave me the opportunity to complete an internship at Free State Stars. Other coaches like Manqoba Mngqithi, Pitso Mosimane, Rulani Mokwena, and Lehlohonolo Seema have all guided me in some way."

Mongoya revealed that possession-based football is his preferred style of play and it is a philosophy the fans can expect from Kruger in the coming season, but he also says they are flexible enough to adjust depending on the type of opponents they face.
