The proposed move is now at an advanced stage, although the finer details of the agreement still need to be concluded and – crucially – the deal remains subject to Mokwana successfully completing a medical before the transfer can be formalised.
The 27-year-old was on Chiefs’ radar two years ago but ultimately opted for a move to Tunisia, joining Esperance de Tunis from Sekhukhune United in August 2024 in a deal worth around R7-million according to reports.
Mokwana became a free agent in September after parting ways with Esperance, shortly after returning from a loan spell at Saudi Pro League side Al-Hazem.
A proposed move to Moroccan outfit Wydad Athletic Club was also reported to be close, but registration issues scuppered the deal, leaving the winger to reassess his options as a free agent.
According to the information provided to the public broadcaster, Mokwana had returned to his home province of Mpumalanga while considering his next career move. It was during this period that interest from AmaKhosi emerged.
Chiefs have been looking to strengthen their attacking options, and Mokwana’s pace, direct running and international experience could add a different dimension to their forward line.
The move would not require a transfer fee given his free-agent status, although the remaining formalities, including the medical, must still be completed.
His arrival would represent a second chance at joining the Soweto giants after their interest in him failed to materialise in 2024.
