Gavin Hunt laments inexperience after Chippa United loss

Stellenbosch FC coach Gavin Hunt says inexperience was ultimately what cost them against Chippa United, in a Betway Premiership clash yesterday.

Stellies lost 2-0 at home against the Chilli Boys, which saw them drop into eighth position on the log with nearly a third of the season played.

Hunt says while they played better football for a large chunk of the game, their young players just don’t know how to take advantage of that and kill a game off.

"Yeah, we played some good stuff at times. There was some big football, some big chances, but as I said, the first goal was an absolute killer. Once that went in, we were chasing it, and with them, the way they play, they're going to catch you with their pace," Hunt said.

"Figuareido was brilliant upfront; I thought tonight he was strong, and they're going to catch you. So disappointing from that perspective. We should've handled it better. As I said, we have a very young team with a lot of inexperienced players, and they don't know how to take it by the scruff of the neck. They're going to have to learn these types of results, which will teach them how to play sometimes, but we should've won."

He says they had plenty of chances to score even before Chippa netted first through Harold Majadibodu in the 27th minute.

With their push for the equaliser late in the game, Hunt knew there was always the risk of conceding another goal, which did happen as Imraan Jones secured the points for Chippa in the 83rd minute.

Stellies returned to their home ground of Danie Craven stadium for the first time this season, and Hunt says the result was disappointing in front of their home fans.
