A late penalty try rescued three log points for the Stormers, but Dobson said there was frustration after letting several chances slip in a game they felt they should have won.
"It was a bit of a mixed one for us as we are very frustrated that we didn't get five points as at some stages our dominance was pretty imperious but I also thought we were lucky in the end to manage to get three," he said.
Dobson pointed to costly mistakes and ill-discipline as key reasons the Stormers failed to secure maximum points.
"That we didn't get five was frustrating because we conceded needless penalties, two of them in try scoring positions and one of those was effectively a 14 point swing," he said.
"There was also a knock on before that from Evan (Roos) near the tryline when it looked like we probably would have scored. Then Imad (Khan) was played before receiving the ball and knocked on. Those were four missed tries. That was frustrating as they were our mistakes."
The Stormers were also dealt a major blow early in the match when veteran flank Deon Fourie suffered a knee injury following a croc-roll incident involving Ulster captain Iain Henderson, who received a 20-minute red card.
According to Dobson, Fourie tore knee ligaments and is expected to miss the rest of the season.
"That kind of incident really needs to be removed from the game and I think that is something that should see the player sent off for the entire game (and not just 20 minutes)," said Dobson.
"I feel very sorry for Deon and it is also a big blow for us, particularly given the form that Deon was in."
Despite the disappointment, the Stormers still have a chance to finish top of the log next weekend if they manage to beat Cardiff in their final match and Glasgow Warriors fail to win at Ulster.
