Luane Smith believes she is mentally and physically fit to tackle TNL 2026

Gauteng Jaguars goal attack Luane Smith says she entered her second Telkom Netball League season mentally and physically stronger.

Smith joined the Jaguars for the 2026 campaign after featuring for rivals Gauteng Golden Fireballs in her debut season.

Smith told SABC Sport that her move to study at the University of Pretoria played a key role in her switch, adding that the transition was seamless.

“I am really enjoying my second season so far. I love playing for the Jaguars and we have a great team dynamic. I also feel that I am more mentally and physically prepared for this season,” said Smith.

“The transition to the Jaguars was very comfortable. Although the two teams differ in how they prepare for matches in the team room and in meetings, I felt I slotted in very easily.

"The management and players were open and welcoming. I moved to Pretoria to study at Tuks, which ultimately led to my move to the Jaguars.

"There is a lot of trust in our team, and each player brings their own personality and flair."

The Jaguars finished second on the log with four points after six matches, following a 56–36 loss to the Free State Crinums on Friday.

Despite the defeat, Smith was encouraged by the team’s overall performance in Durban during Power Week 1.

“The team did very well. We are improving with each game and remain focused on achieving the goals we set for ourselves," she added.

"There is a lot we can take from this week and learn from, which is exciting as we look ahead to the next Power Week and maintain our standards.

The 20-year-old also unpacked areas for improvement ahead of Power Week 2 at Ellis Park Arena in Johannesburg, stating the need to keep the ball and maintaining composure.

“We have a lot of versatile players, which creates opportunities for different combinations. I think we adapted well and are learning each other’s strengths and styles.

"One area we can improve on is keeping possession and not rushing when we have the ball. I am very excited for the next Power Week,” Smith concluded.
