Kabelo Mulaudzi secures back-to-back victories at the Absa Run Your City 10km race

South African road running star Kabelo Mulaudzi truly earned his nickname, “Mr Podium,” by securing his second straight win at the Absa Run Your City 10km in Durban.

The 28-year-old Boxer Running Club athlete triumphed over a strong field, crossing the finish line at Durban Beachfront in a time of 27 minutes and 41 seconds on Sunday.

The event drew a full house, with over 10,000 runners taking part in the race.

Alexandra-based runner Kabelo Mulaudzi gave it his all in pursuit of the national 10km record of 27:48, set by Adrian Wildschutt in April.

However, he told SABC Sport that changes made to the race route may have impacted his chances of breaking the record.

Despite narrowly missing the national record, Mulaudzi still walked away with R30,000 in prize money, plus an R80,000 bonus for clocking a time under 27:45—bringing his total earnings to R110,000.

Lesotho’s Kamohelo Mofolo finished second in a national record time of 27:47 while representing Excel Running Club, and pre-race favourite Vincent Kipkorir settled for third place in 27:48.

“I’m proud of my performance because I came into this race determined to win,” he told SABC Sport, sweat pouring down his face after crossing the finish line.

“Last year was tough with injuries, but I’ve bounced back strongly with consistent performances this season.

I had hoped to break the national 10km record, but I ran out of steam in the last 5km. That’s where I need to improve—finishing strong. Still, I clocked a personal best, making this one of my fastest races yet. But honestly, my target was the SA record.”

“I wasn’t desperate to break the record—I just truly believed I had it in me,” said a hopeful Mulaudzi. “I’ll keep trying, and I believe that in one of the upcoming races, I’ll get it right.”

Mulaudzi, who is coached by Richard Meyer, credited his consistent sub-28-minute performances—including six victories in the Run Your City 10km series since 2023—to his coach’s meticulous planning and dedication.

Meyer was on hand to witness Mulaudzi clinch his second consecutive title in Durban.

“I’ve been focused on training and following my coach’s guidance. Durban is my favourite course, and had we gone out faster in the first 5km, I believe I could have broken the record. Mofolo and Vincent gave me a real challenge today.

I’m happy for Mofolo for setting a new national record for Lesotho. Our rivalry began in Tshwane when he beat me, but I’ve now managed to beat him twice in a row,” Mulaudzi said.

His upcoming schedule includes the Central Gauteng Athletics Provincial 10km Championships, followed by the Absa Run Your City 10km and the Durban Hollywood 10km race in Tshwane this August.

“My goal is to win the remaining Absa races and to stay healthy and injury-free,” he said.
