UWC look to grind maximum points in HWBSL university derby

University of the Western Cape coach Thinasonke Mbuli says the team needs to dig deep to secure maximum points when they host the University of Fort Hare in Cape Town on Sunday.

UWC come into this clash looking for a win, having played to three draws in previous matches consecutively.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mbuli says they have done their analysis to help execute their game plan against fellow students.

“It is going to be another tough game against another very strong side. They have really good players, full of pace and skillful, so we are expecting another tough one. So we will have to dig very deep to get the results we want. But we have to again do some analysis.

What worked for us last week is that we did our analysis on them and watched their previous games and have identified their weaknesses.

It is going to be tough though, they are a very good side, full of energy and skillful. But we are playing at home, and want to leverage on that,’’ said Mbuli.

Despite being last season’s runners up, UWC has faced challenges in navigating this year’s league campaign, sitting at 11th place on the log with only four wins in 13 outings. Mbuli says that she is still trying to find working combinations in her squad, also trying to refocus the team ahead of their catch up matches.

“We are currently working on so many things, trying to find the right combinations for our team. Our lineup keeps changing every week. We want to be patient with this team. So the problem we have now is that we have a lot of catch up games. I think we have almost five catch up matches. So we continue to work on a lot of things to try and improve this team,’’ added Mbuli.

By next month UWC will have postponed some of their fixtures again due to the Varsity Football Tournament.

Mbuli adds that it is going to be tough to find a meaningful balance between playing catch up matches, Varsity football and the league.

“We will have postponed games again as we are going to Varsity football, so it is going to be tough to try and find balance on catching up on the league and Varsity football. Yes we have to still work on finding the right combinations, so we can start winning games consistently,’’ she expressed.
