Smidt returns to UWC following a successful spell with the University of Cape Town, where she helped the side finish ninth on the log with 37 points from 30 matches.
Speaking to SABC Sport, Mbuli says they expect Smidt to bring leadership and experience to the squad.
“Thalea is back, and we are happy and excited to have her back. We have been pursuing her for the past three seasons. We lost two central midfielders last season, so she is coming in to fill that gap. I also believe she will play a leadership role and guide the younger players because we all know that she comes with great experience,” said Mbuli.
Mbuli added that Smidt has returned as a more mature and experienced player - qualities she believes will benefit the team this season.
“She is coming back now as a different and more mature player. The younger players are already looking up to her at training. This is familiar territory for her, and some of the players she played with before are still around, so there are familiar faces for her. She is settling in well. We do not want to put too much pressure on her, but we hope she will play a key role in helping the team progress this season,” added Mbuli.
UWC finished fifth on the log last season with 48 points from 30 matches. Mbuli says the technical team has already identified areas that need improvement ahead of the new campaign.
“Our analysts did a detailed report on last season. We know where we need to improve. We drew too many games last season, and we do not want that this year. Even though we did not have our best season, we still conceded fewer goals than Sundowns Ladies. We want to make sure that we do not drop points this season,” she expressed.
