Thinasoke Mbuli: Unprofessionalism adds to HWBSL lack of sponsorships

University of the Western Cape coach Thinasoke Mbuli says the unprofessionalism displayed by Durban Ladies on Sunday afternoon is the reason the Hollywoodbets Super League will fail to attract more sponsorships.

This after the already relegated KwaZulu Natal outfit decided to forfeit its away fixture against UWC without explanation.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mbuli says that she is disheartened that people will not take women’s football seriously, if clubs continue with disrespectful behaviour towards the beautiful game.

“It is really disappointing, because we want people to take our league seriously. I mean if we don't take the league seriously as teams, why should we expect a buyin from supporters and sponsors. This is the very reason we will struggle to have viewership and more people attending matches. If such things continue to happen - the Hollywoodbets Super League will fail to get sponsorships. We need to do better as clubs and respect the game,’’ said Mbuli.

UWC has experienced walkovers in the past three seasons, first with Thunderbirds Ladies, and with TS Galaxy last year followed by Durban ladies this afternoon.

Mbuli says there should be a harsh penalty for these occurrences otherwise the league will be faced with such every season.

“SAFA really needs to take action. For us it is disappointing because this is not new - we have faced this three times in the past three seasons. It is becoming a trend and if teams don’t get pushed - it means we will be facing such every season,” added Mbuli.

Mbuli says she hopes that the South Africa Football Association will make the right call after receiving the match commissioner’s report.

“The officials were there, the match commissioner was there. So now it's up to SAFA to make the right call,’’ she expressed.

The next stop for the students will be against Royal AM at the UWC Stadium on Saturday.
