Thinasonke Mbuli backs the new Hollywoodbets Super League format

University of the Western Cape coach Thinasonke Mbuli welcomes the new Hollywoodbets Super League format, saying it will help ease the financial burden of travel for clubs.

There has been suggestions that the 2026 edition of the league would be divided into two streams, with eight teams in each — aiming at reducing travel costs.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mbuli says her side is pleased with the new structure and is looking forward to seeing how it performs in its first year of implementation.

"The new league with the new structure, eish! The two streams, ja, a lot has been said about that but there would be less games yes but also less financial stress and traveling," said Mbuli

"It was just us and UCT this side. The closest team to us is Richmond so it's just a lot financially which means we need more money because we only have two teams in Cape Town and the rest are away games. Which means our budget for the season becomes too much so honestly we are happy with the new structure. We are also can't wait to see exactly what would happen but we are happy with the structure."

UWC finished fifth on the log last season with 48 points from 30 matches. Mbuli has revealed a shift in the club’s recruitment strategy, with a stronger focus on bringing in young players who can grow within the system and inject fresh energy into the squad as they push for title contention.

The start of the Hollywoodbets Super League season has been delayed due to the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations schedule. Mbuli says the longer pre-season has given her team valuable time to improve fitness, build combinations, and sharpen their tactical approach.
