UWC beat UJ to retain the Women’s Varsity Football title

University of the Western Cape coach Thinasonke Mbuli is impressed with her team’s resilience to secure their third Women’s Varsity Football title in a row.

UWC retained their varsity championship title after a hard fought 1- 0 win over the University of Johannesburg Ladies at the UJ Soweto Stadium on Friday night.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mbuli says she credits their analyst for accurately studying their opponents.

“I think for this one we must give it to our analyst - we studied their opponents well. We knew their weaknesses and we didn't miss. The players stretched the game until the last whistle, I am happy with the win,’’ said Mbuli.

Mbuli shares her assessment of the match, stating that the team’s composure in the second half won them the trophy.

“At some point we struggled to stop their build up play, because their centre backs were stretching high - trying to overtake Chelsea. In the second half we said let's allow them to have the ball and when they get to our block, we then try and stop them,’’ added Mbuli.

Udubs captain Tiffany Kortjie won the Goal Rush accolade after scoring the first and only goal to help her team win the Varsity Championship. Mbuli says she is happy that Kortjie led from the front, having also scored the goal that made the difference.

“Two days ago I was fighting with Tiffany over something else, and said be a leader in the team. Remember she is our vice captain in the senior team, and the captain for this one. And she stepped and did a good job, and that's what we want from her,’’ she expressed.
