UJ will face the University of Pretoria in the 2026 final at the UJ Soweto Stadium on Wednesday.
Speaking to SABC Sport, Mgcoyi says reaching the final is a testament to the team’s hard work throughout the season.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the UJ Women’s team compete in the final and showcase the hard work they have put in throughout the tournament. To clinch the title, we need to remain disciplined, focused and execute our game plan. The players must stay composed, work for each other, and take our opportunities when they come. It will require commitment, belief, resilience, and a strong team effort from the first whistle to the last,” said Mgcoyi.
UJ Ladies have enjoyed an impressive run to the final, remaining unbeaten with four wins from five matches. Mgcoyi is proud of the team’s professionalism and consistency throughout the competition.
“I’m very proud of the team’s performance leading up to the final. They have shown consistency, resilience, character, and a strong team spirit throughout the competition. They have continued to improve with every match and have worked extremely hard to put themselves in this position. Reaching the final is a reflection of the commitment from the players, technical team and everyone supporting the team. We know there are still areas we can improve, but the team is in a good place and ready for the challenge,” added Mgcoyi.
UJ Ladies, who previously won the title in 2013 and 2022, will be looking to add a third championship to their trophy cabinet. Mgcoyi says winning the title during Women’s Month would make the achievement even more significant and could inspire the next generation of women footballers.
“Winning the championship during Women’s Month would make the achievement even more meaningful. It would celebrate the talent, strength, and determination of women in sport while highlighting the importance of creating opportunities for women to succeed both on and off the field.
“At UJ, our players have the opportunity to pursue their studies while playing football at a competitive level, showing young girls that they can excel academically while pursuing their passion for football. Winning the title would not only reward the players for their hard work but also inspire the next generation of women in football and demonstrate what is possible when women are given the right opportunities and support,” she expressed.
