Sharika O’Malley return to Banyana Banyana lauded by UWC coach

University of the Western Cape assistant coach Msekeli Mvalo is happy that their star defender Sharika O’Malley has returned to the national team setup.

O’Mallley is currently in camp with Banyana Banyana for their second leg of a 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier against DR Congo at Dobsonville Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Mvalo believes O’Malley is a special player and can help the team secure qualification to next year’s tournament in Morocco.

“I am happy to see her back in the national team, it makes me proud as a coach. This truly means, as a team, we are doing something correct,” said Mvalo.

“I believe she has what it takes to help Banyana qualify for WAFCON.”

Having played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg at Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa last Wednesday, Banyana need victory at home to seal the deal in Soweto.

Mvalo believes O’Mally has a big role to play in this clash, considering her international experience and special skills in defence.

“I have no doubt that, if given a chance, she can command her position and play a crucial role to help Banyana qualify. We are talking about a player who is quite disciplined and  has great international experience," added Mvalo.

UWC is also represented in the national team by their captain Fikile Magama, and the coach has wished both players well ahead of the match.

“I am happy that Banyana managed to secure a draw away from home, and I trust that they will approach tonight’s match with intent.

"I am proud to see UWC players in the squad – I wish them well and they should make us proud,” he concluded.
