UJ coach Ladies Nthabeleng Modiko expects competitive Varsity Football final

University of Johannesburg Ladies coach Nthabeleng “Dunga” Modiko says she expects a highly competitive Women’s Varsity Football final against the University of Pretoria.

UJ will face the University of Pretoria ladies in the 2026 final at the UJ Soweto Stadium tonight.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Modiko says her players need to stay true to their club identity and make good decisions during crucial moments of the match.

"We are looking forward to what should be a very competitive final against TUKS. We know each other very well so it will come down to who can execute their game plan better on the day,” Modiko  said.

“For us it will be about staying true to our identity, maintaining our intensity and making good decisions in the important moments. We have worked hard to get here to be honest but the final requires another level of concentration, discipline and belief. “Ultimately we need to play with courage, take our opportunities and show the character that has brought us this far."

UJ have enjoyed an impressive run to the final, remaining unbeaten with four wins and one draw from their five matches.

Modiko says she is pleased with how her players have applied themselves throughout the tournament, despite the challenges they have faced.

"I am very pleased with my team, for all that they've achieved so far in the varsity competition. What has impressed me the most is the consistency and the growth we have shown throughout the competition,” she added.

‘We have had to deal with different challenges but the players have remained committed to our principles and have continued to improve from game to game. “Getting to the final is a reflection of the work that the players and staff have put in but we also know that the job is not finished, we now have to make sure that all the good work we have done throughout the tournament is reflected in our performance in the final."
