Tinkler notes Mntambo absence and much-needed FIFA break

Sekhukhune United coach Eric Tinkler says his side will take the positives from their MTN8 semi-final exit against Stellenbosch FC.

Babina Noko have been flying in the Betway Premiership, winning all three of their opening fixtures, including a statement victory over Soweto giants Orlando Pirates.

However, they could not carry that momentum into the MTN8 competition, losing 3–1 on aggregate to Stellies.

Tinkler admits the demanding schedule has contributed to a lacklustre performance in the cup.

"Eight games in the space of four weeks make it difficult to fix certain things. It is more about recovery these days, and in the lead-up to this match, the training sessions were more focused on video sessions than sessions on the field," explained Tinkler.

Tinkler has also given an update on the condition of club captain Linda Mntambo, who has missed the last three matches of the new season.

Mntambo was forced onto the sidelines after picking up an injury on 13 August in a Betway Premiership clash against TS Galaxy.

The midfielder remains unavailable as he continues his recovery…

"Linda is our captain, and he was doing well for us, but unfortunately, he has a fractured ankle, so he'll be out for at least the next three months, but in his absence, the other players have done well."

With Sekhukhune enjoying a flawless start to the Premiership campaign, Tinkler was asked whether that form has inspired a push for their first-ever league title.

The coach, however, insists the team must remain grounded, confirming that his mandate for the season is to secure a top-four finish, while still keeping the dream alive.

Sekhukhune United now turn their attention back to league action with back-to-back fixtures against AmaZulu and newly promoted Durban City on Wednesday and Saturday, respectively.

After that, the FIFA international break will provide some relief, with Tinkler saying the players who aren’t called up for national duty and the technical staff will use the window to recharge.
