Simphiwe Mcineka confident Richards Bay can upset Sundowns in MTN8 clash

Richards Bay FC centre-back Simphiwe Mcineka says the team is determined to cause an early upset when they face Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 quarter-finals this Sunday.

The Natal Rich Boyz secured the final spot in the top eight after a strong finish to the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.

Speaking at the launch of the #WafaWafa knockout tournament in Randburg, Mcineka highlighted the unpredictable nature of cup football and urged everyone not to underestimate so-called underdogs.

"One thing I love about tournaments is there are no small teams, anything is possible. That's why the MTN8 is called Wafa Wafa, so anything can happen on Sunday,” Mcineka said.

“I know a lot of people have already written us off, they think we won't be able to challenge Sundowns but for us, the way we prepare at the gym and our hunger as well, we will make sure that we will get through to the next stage of the tournament."

Richards Bay underwent major changes during the off-season, losing key players such as Yanela Mbuthuma and Somila Ntsundwana.

However, the club has bolstered its ranks with experienced signings like Gabadinho Mhango, Lindokuhle Mtshali, and Thabani Zuke.

Mcineka acknowledges the void left by the departures but believes the squad has evolved and is ready to compete.

"To be honest the new players really filled in the gaps, even though we lost players that we really appreciated who also helped us finish in the top eight. The new signees gelled in well with the team and they are really dedicated,” he added.

“We saw them during the Premier's Cup, they helped us win the tournament. So, I think there'll be a lot of surprises in this clash."
