Ruben Amorim lands AC Milan job after Man Utd exit

The 41-year-old arrives at the San Siro six months after his dismissal from Manchester United, ending speculation over his next move and taking charge of a club desperate to rebound from a disappointing campaign.

Milan parted ways with Massimiliano Allegri after a disastrous finish to the season saw the seven-time European champions miss out on Champions League qualification. Their hopes of securing a top-four Serie A finish were dashed on the final day following a shock 2-1 home defeat to Cagliari, a result that intensified supporter frustration and sparked major changes behind the scenes.

Amorim has signed a long-term deal with the Rossoneri and immediately becomes the central figure in the club's rebuilding project. Reports in Italy suggest he will earn around 3.5 million euros per season and has agreed to waive the salary he was still owed by Manchester United following his departure from Old Trafford.

"There are ambitions that stay with you throughout your career, and coaching AC Milan has always been one of mine," Amorim said after his appointment.

"I know exactly what this club means: history, prestige and an extraordinary fanbase around the world. It is a challenge I embrace with pride and enthusiasm, fully aware of what these colours represent."

Milan believe Amorim's progressive tactical philosophy can help revive a side that struggled for consistency throughout the previous campaign. The club described his approach as modern and dominant, qualities they hope will return them to the upper reaches of Italian and European football.

Amorim's stock rose sharply during a highly successful spell at Sporting CP, where he ended the club's 19-year wait for a Portuguese league title in 2021 before guiding them to another championship three years later. That success made him one of Europe's most sought-after young coaches and ultimately led to his move to Manchester United in November 2024.

However, his time in England proved far less successful. Amorim lasted just 14 months at Old Trafford before being dismissed in January, with reports suggesting concerns over his management style and reluctance to move away from his preferred 3-4-3 system contributed to the club's loss of confidence in him.

Now he faces another demanding assignment at Milan, where expectations remain high despite recent struggles. His first match in charge will come during pre-season against Celtic on July 25, while an intriguing encounter against United in Wroclaw on August 15 will provide an early opportunity to face his former employers.

With Milan aiming to reclaim their place among Europe's elite, Amorim's appointment represents both a fresh start for the coach and a bold gamble by one of football's most decorated clubs.
