Franco Baresi's death leaves AC Milan and Italy in mourning

Baresi was one of the greatest defenders in football history and spent his entire professional career with AC Milan, becoming a symbol of loyalty, leadership and excellence. During his remarkable career, he helped the Italian giants win six Serie A titles and three European Cups.

On the international stage, Baresi earned legendary status with Italy and was part of the squad that won the 1982 FIFA World Cup. He also captained his country and remained one of the most respected figures in Italian football long after his retirement.

AC Milan paid an emotional tribute to the club icon, highlighting the lasting impact he made during more than four decades with the Rossoneri.

"The entire history of AC Milan is in tears following the passing of Franco Baresi," the club said in a statement.

"His example and integrity will be forever etched into the Club's DNA, just as his iconic number six shirt is.

"The condolences AC Milan extends to Franco Baresi's family at such a difficult time are shared by every Rossonero, who feels this loss as their own."

Baresi had been battling illness in recent years. In 2025, he underwent surgery to remove a lung nodule but remained active in public life. He returned to San Siro on several occasions and was one of the final torchbearers during the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

His death marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in Italian football, but his achievements, leadership and commitment to AC Milan and Italy will ensure his legacy lives on for generations.
