The home team dominated the contest from the start and were awarded a penalty just before halftime when Mahmoud Trezeguet was fouled in the box.

Salah stepped up and converted the spot-kick for his 61st international goal and hand Egypt a 1-0 lead.

The hosts continued their onslaught and were given another penalty in teh first half injury-time for a handball, this time Manchester City forward Marmoush making no mistake from the spot.

The seven-time African champions did not take their foot off the pedal after the halftime interval but could not add to their tally on the scoreboard.

Egypt will qualify for the World Cup, to be co-hosted by USA, Canada and Mexico, if they beat if they overcome Burkina Faso away on Tuesday.
