Miguel Cardoso explains unique build-up to Sundowns win at Sekhukhune

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has revealed a unique approach in preparing for his side’s Betway Premiership clash away to Sekhukhune United on Tuesday night.

The defending champions struck twice in the closing stages, as well-timed substitutions turned the contest in their favour with attackers Nuno Santos and Bryan León finding the net to secure a 2-0 victory.

Cardoso, who has recently come under fire from sections of the Sundowns supporters, explained why the build-up to the fixture differed from their usual routine.

"Today was a victory of relief – the relief of the group, we knew that this game would be very particular on the tactical approach that we had to have," said Cardoso.

"We decided [to keep] together the group a little bit longer than usual and use even more players together than usual so that we could create good momentum to arrive and play this game.

"The preparation was very interesting and challenging for the coaching staff, we had a lot to do, starting from the analysis group to the assistant coaches, in order to propose the players' different approaches for the match.

"We also knew that Sekhukhune had the capacity to play in different structures, how they can aggress with the speed they have in the front, and we had to prepare both realities in terms of systems, so it was quite challenging even in the morning when we had meetings."

On the title race, the Sundowns coach was relieved to have the buffer of going three points clear even though nearest rivals Orlando Pirates have two games in hand.

"Obviously this game was important, we just need to remember that we are obviously in a position where points are [falling] short, so we need to keep scoring the three points every match," he added.

"Obviously coming from a draw in a Champions League match, in which we played well but were not able to keep the advantage in the game.

"Getting a victory today lifts the morale of the team, gives confidence and energy, and makes us believe in what we do – not that we didn't believe, but it's always reassuring and it shows the way we need to follow.

"But this championship, as I said in the very beginning, sometimes people forget – it was clear and I said it, but I don't have any problem repeating it...

"When we had the opening of the [Premiership] with that event with all the coaches, I said this championship will be played probably up until the very end in a very tough way.

"And that had to do with, obviously, the reinforcement of our opponents and that year after year they gather energy in order to fight [against] these years of success that Sundowns have been having.

"And we just need to be committed with good moments, and in the ones that are not so good, don't lose the focus on the direction we have to travel together."
