Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s meteoric rise has the world talking

Former South African players based in the US and now coaches in this country are in unison that Bafana Bafana defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi is not going to stay long in the Major League Soccer (MLS) and is headed straight into the UEFA Champions League market.

Such are the qualities of Mbokazi that the Hluhluwe-born player is already destined for bigger things according to those who watch him every week in the US.

Lebo Moloto played in the USL Championship for years, and has seen talent from the US moving to Europe, and he has no doubt about Mbokazi’s future...

"I follow his game and I think he's a special player. I think the Champions League is calling his name. I don't know how he does it and I think we don't sing enough praises when it comes to defenders like him."

Moloto’s sentiments are also shared with one of South Africa’s top exports to the MLS, a man who has been here in the US for over two decades - Thabiso “Boyyyyz” Khumalo played for DC United in the MLS and is raving about Mbokazi’s talent.

Over the last year, coach Hugo Broos has been asked numerous questions about Mbokazi, and he’s been consistent with his messaging that the 21year-old is one for the future and possibly a future Bafana Bafana captain...

"It's amazing how he progresses every time. I saw his first couple of games for Orlando Pirates and immediately I saw him as a guy with much talent and a lot of power. It's not enough to be a good technical power, you need power in your game, and I think Mbokazi really is the modern defender."
