SAFA NEC to decide on the next Bafana coach next weekend - Jordaan

Speaking during the final press conference of the outgoing head coach Hugo Broos, Jordaan revealed that the National Executive Committee (NEC) will meet next week, to ratify the recommendation of the technical committee. 

Led by its Chairperson, Jack Maluleke, the technical committee intensified the process to appoint Broos’ successor this week, engaging at least four local coaches. 

Jordaan says the decision will be taken next weekend...

"Next week Saturday we will have a NEC meeting and that is when a decision will be taken."

There’s also a strong belief within the technical committee that with the success that South African coaches have had in the last few years and inroads they have made on the continent, the timing is perfect to go local again. 

Former Bafana coach and the most successful club coach in Sub-Saharan Africa, Pitso Mosimane, is seen as the favourite for this job. 

Broos was non-committal when asked about the qualities of his successor.

Bafana Bafana play Guinea in the first 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier between the 23rd and 25th of September, and the new coach is supposed to have started monitoring players as early as this weekend when the Betway Premiership season gets underway. 

Speaking about the departure of Broos, Jordaan says the Belgian-born head coach has brought back some good memories to SA football.

"We want to thank Hugo Broos for being part of making history with Bafana Bafana. We want to wish him farewell and we want to thank him for all the work he's done. Many of the players who weren't close to the national team have now become regulars in the team. many of them were unknown entities, but Broos had the foresight and the vision to establish a very good team."

Broos, a 2017 AFCON-winning head coach with Cameroon, leaves Bafana in a better place than he found them, ranked 54th in the world and 10th on the continent. Jordaan says Broos has left South Africa with a team they can be proud of, and they need a driver who will take over from where the 74-year-old left off...
