Kaizer Chiefs finally sweeping into women’s football

Kaizer Chiefs has taken the first step towards establishing a women’s football team after signing an agreement with Springs-based side Home Sweepers Ladies FC.

The timing of the move is required in order to comply with CAF club licensing regulations for the club’s participation in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.

However, Amakhosi marketing director Jessica Motaung says this has been a long-standing partnership that has now turned formal, not only for compliance but as a commitment to growing women’s football.

"Our approach is not one of compliance, it's one of involvement, participation and making sure that women's football is well represented," Motaung told SABC Sport.

"We have been supporting a club in the league that many people don't know about for a few years now, we're excited about that, and we are making sure that women's football in South Africa is going to change.

"And we'll make announcements in due course, but I'm excited about it and I've just come back from a women's leadership conference at CAF, which was quite inspiring to meet women making a big difference on the continent and adding to women's leadership in the game.

"But certainly, from a Chiefs point of view, we will get stuck into the women's game."

Home Sweepers is a club owned by Chiefs legend and former Banyana Banyana head coach Joseph “Skheshekheshe” Mkhonza, and is currently competes in the Sasol Provincial Women's League in Gauteng.

SABC Sport understands that Chiefs will now increase their level of involvement in the team, with official announcements expected before the 2025/26 season.

"I think we have to look at the fundamentals – are we going to professionalise the game? There are a number of things we need to look at," she added.

"We can't do things just like they have been done in the past, so we'll make some announcements in due course. I'm just excited, I've been watching them grow and I think our involvement is going to take them to greater heights."
