Da Cruz keeps faith in Petersen despite recent costly errors

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz is backing the club’s captain and number one goalkeeper, Brandon Petersen, despite having committed serious mistakes that led to the team dropping points recently.

Responding to questions during a media engagement at the Chiefs Village in Naturena today, Da Cruz says Petersen also made some mistakes last season, but says he will continue to support him, and nothing is going to change.

Petersen committed some errors against Richards Bay FC, Mamelodi Sundowns FC and Lamontville Golden Arrows, and Da Cruz says he spoke to him this past weekend...

"Peterson also made mistakes last season, but he also had a good campaign last season by securing a lot of points for his team. He is our captain and we trust him, I also spoke to him this past weekend about this."

Chiefs also have most of their players who were out due to injury back on the pitch, especially the left-backs. After a long-term injury, left-footed centre back Rushwin Dortley was also back on the pitch, as he’s played a few friendlies.

Still on the injury list IS Flavio Silva, Langelihle Phili, Thabiso Monyane and Inacio Miguel.

"There are two types of injuries we are dealing with. There are the injuries players picked up last season and so it takes time for us to recover these players to 100%, and some injuries have also happened this season but our medical staff are trying to do their best. Although we have players out, we have complete trust in the squad."

Last week, Da Cruz also handed a debut to winger and South African junior international Faiz Abarahams. The Frenchman is happy with his progress and the quality he’s showing.

Chiefs are hosting the struggling Siwelele FC at the Dobsonville Stadium this coming Sunday, and this will be a new pitch for Da Cruz, but he is not bothered since they will have a match-day-minus-one training session there.
