Durban City urged to find cutting edge ahead of CAF debut

The Citizens created the better chances in their Betway Premiership clash with Stellenbosch FC at Chatsworth Stadium on Tuesday night, but were unable to turn their dominance into goals as the match ended goalless.

Ben Youssef is pleased with another clean sheet, but admits the lack of goals is a bigger concern with their continental campaign now just days away.

"We have to take the positives from this game, it is our second clean sheet and I think the team is starting to play much better. We are creating a lot of opportunities, but unfortunately in the last third the team is unable to score. We need to focus on our finishing, and we need to find solutions before the Confederation Cup because it is very important to win our first game at home before we travel."

The former Kaizer Chiefs co-coach says there is no need to abandon the defensive structure that has served the team well, but insists greater attention must now be given to their attacking play and finishing.

The stalemate leaves Durban City sixth on the Betway Premiership table with six points from five matches, while Stellenbosch move into 10th place on five points.

Ben Youssef was also asked about the targets for the season, with the coach stressing the importance of securing another top-eight finish while also challenging his squad to add another cup trophy to the club’s recent success in the Nedbank Cup.

The Citizens will now shift their focus to continental football, with Durban City making their CAF debut against Burundi’s Rukinzo FC in the first leg of their preliminary-round tie on Sunday. The match is scheduled for 3pm at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
