University of the Western Cape’s new signing Julia Cropper says she is happy to finally land a contract with the team after training with them for over five months.

The former Maidenhead United player is expected to alternate with UWC’s first choice goalkeeper Siphesihle Dlamini and help the struggling Cape Town side to return to winning ways.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Copper says she is delighted to be back home after playing in the United Kingdom for almost two years.

“I am delighted to join UWC and I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of this prestigious setup. South African football is developing and progressing well, along with the best on the continent.

“It is a great feeling to be able to bring my vast experience and knowledge in the game back to South Africa. I hope to achieve many great things with UWC, who are already a decorated football club,’’ said Cropper.

The KwaZulu Natal football rising star, left South Africa in August 2023 after being scouted by AFC Bournemouth.

She reflects on her football journey in the UK, stating that the experience she accumulated that side has transformed her into a much better player.

“My football career in the UK played a vital part in my success. I learnt from premier league level coaches and played alongside the world’s best.

England is the home of football and it is an honour to be able to play in such an environment.

“Initially, I was scouted by AFC Bournemouth and I have grown so much as a person and player since then. It is definitely an experience that I will never take for granted as playing overseas is a dream for many,’’ said Cooper.

The 21-year-old shares why she believes this is the right time to establish herself in her home country.

“I hold high expectations ahead of my South African campaign. The fans and community hold a special place in my heart.

“There is so much talent on the African continent. Football is a sport that unites the country and I’m proud to be part of it. I hope to inspire more young girls to play football and to never stop dreaming,’’ she expressed.
