Hugo Broos slams FIFA's three-match Themba Zwane suspension

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has confirmed that SAFA will appeal FIFA's decision to increase Themba Zwane's suspension from one match to three, insisting the punishment is too harsh.

Zwane was sent off during South Africa's World Cup opener against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca last Thursday after a challenge that resulted in a straight red card.

However, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee subsequently imposed an additional two-match ban for a breach of Article 14 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code,

Speaking ahead of Bafana's crucial Group A clash against Czechia in Atlanta on Thursday evening, Broos expressed his frustration with the sanction.

"The red card is too severe. I looked back at the situation where Temba got a red card.  I don't think it was a red card. When I see what happened yesterday with Messi, then I don't agree, certainly not. I think there was not even a VAR with Messi. So when you see the situation, the Mexican player blocked my player," said Broos

"He's not guarding the ball. He's just holding Temba. And Temba tried to get over him and he put his arm over his shoulder. That's all he does. He didn't do that. When you get a red card for that and then three game suspensions."

"I'm sorry, but this is much, much, much too severe and again and again. I don't want Messi to get a red card because that player has to be on the pitch. You saw yesterday what a wonderful player he is. But yeah, what is the difference then? So I'm a little bit frustrated about that, certainly because Temba got three matches suspension."

Broos also revealed that he’d had some tough words with his players after the 2-0 defeat to Mexico instead of criticising them in public.

He says Bafana must beat Czechia.

On criticism he has faced following the first game at the World Cup, which ended in a loss and two red cards, Broos urged his detractors to keep their distance.

Broos reminded all that he was hailed after sealing qualification to the global showpiece but has always known things will turn in tough moments such are the fickle fans.
