Exclusive: Motsepe Championship outfit All Stars FC up for sale

Motsepe Foundation Championship side All Stars FC is being put up for sale with chairman Lunga Ncwana ready to listen to offers, SABC Sport can reveal.

According to club director Thando Sodinga, who is facilitating the imminent transition on behalf of the owner, the status of the second tier club could cost an upward of R12-million depending on negotiations.

The team relocated to Johannesburg at the start of the 2022/23 season after missing out on promotion to the DStv Premiership less than a year ago while still based in Cape Town, but the move has presented different challenges.

“Mr Ncwana was aiming for automatic promotion this year, but he felt it’s about time he let the team go because as of next season he has no interest to invest in football,” Sodinga told SABC Sport on Wednesday.

All Stars, coached by Sinethemba Badela, slipped to sixth place on the log table at the weekend following a 2-2 draw away to TTM.

There’s an outside chance to still make the promotion play-off, a round robin league between one Premier League team and two in the Motsepe Championship that finish second and third at the end of the season, in the five games that remain.

But Ncwana has made up his mind about selling.

“His main challenge is being in Joburg, it’s not what he expected. He was struggling with the field for the home games…he anticipated playing in Tsakane, but those fields were [initially] not approved. So he had to play in different facilities,” Sodinga explained.

All Stars hosted their league games in Soshanguve, then Bidvest Stadium and most recently Tsakane, when the venue was finally given the greenlight.

“The training facilities were also an issue. With his ambition, being the winner that he is, the fact that the club cannot be automatically promoted this season he wants to switch the focus to his own businesses. He hasn’t thought about going back to Cape Town, at the moment the decision is to step away from professional football.”

How much does chairman Ncwana, a well-known businessman, want for the club?

“What he said to me is that it’s not about the money. Yes he is trying to recover any losses incurred, but that’s unlikely because of all the years invested. What he has put as a price tag is around R12-million, but obviously it depends on the seriousness of the buyer or anyone putting in an offer to purchase,” Sodinga responded.
